Biodiversity data for conservation

Data sources

Numerous databases and data sets already exist on species, their habitats and threats, as well as the conservation responses
put in place. Here we provide links to key examples of use in monitoring.
Database of Biodiversity Data Sources for Conservation Monitoring

Version 2.0 OUT NOW!!!

Here you can access a database created by the Group in collaboration with Re:wild (formerly Global Wildlife Conservation) as part of an inventory of available data sources.

The database of data sources was put together by PJ Stephenson with support from Carrie Stengel and was made possible with funding from Re:wild (formerly Global Wildlife Conservation). Production of Version 2 was supported by funds from the Swiss Network for International Studies to the University of Lausanne through the project Unblocking the Flow of Biodiversity Data for Multi-Stakeholder Environmental Sustainability Management. Angela Ruiz de Paz helped compile new material for the update.

The rationale, methods and conclusions from the inventory are presented in the following paper, freely available online:
Stephenson, P.J. & Stengel, C. 2020. An inventory of biodiversity data sources for conservation monitoring. PLoS ONE, 15(12): e0242923. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0242923

The database includes 5 tables:

Table 1. Global biodiversity data sources of potential value in monitoring biodiversity state.

Table 2. Global data sources of potential value in monitoring pressures and threats to biodiversity.

Table 3. Global data sources of potential value in monitoring conservation responses to biodiversity loss.

Table 4. Global data sources with multiple uses for biodiversity monitoring.

Table 5. Reports synthesizing large biodiversity data sets over time.

The attached database is currently presented as a pdf but an interactive spreadsheet is being developed and will be posted soon.

Data managers are encouraged to let us know of any errors or of any other data sources that could be considered for inclusion in the database. Please write to PJ Stephenson at SpeciesMonitoringSG@gmail.com.
